March 2010
Left field
Ok, since the #5 spot has been filled, let’s talk about the other question mark in the field. Left field.
Winn
Gardner
Grandersonin left/Gardner in Center
Hoffman.
Ok.. time for me to discuss this
Winn- Defensively great, but at the back end of his career, how long can we expect him to keep that up? I see Winn as a guy for the bench.
Gardner- Great defense, young, and has the speed on his side. Offensively a question, but a .270 average last season makes me confident in gardner. I think he’ll be our best option.
Grandeson/Gardner- I’ll call this the “Flop choice”. This is where Gardner wins the LF job, then moves to center, and Granderson takes left. The issue with this choice is that Gardner has been working in left, and Granderson in Center, so this would take time for them to make the adjustment. I just say no here
Hoffs- watching him play I like him like I liked shelley Duncan, and would suggest to the Yankees they use him like Duncan. He will be one f the Util Outfielders.
My opinion?? Brett in left, Curt in Center, Nick da Swish in Right.
And the winner is…
PHIL HUGHES!!!
Ok, I know that we are the Yankees, but I am still high on the Hughes and Joba duo. I know that the #5 spot isn’t exactly a spot that you’ll only see one pitcher in, And hughes could move to #4 in case of an injury (See Joba 2009) but I like the move of giving Hughes a chance. Also, Joba needs to get his head back on streight, and maye losing his spot to Hughes will do that.
Now, we have a few back up plans in case Phil struggles. If Phil struggles, we can go to Joba as the #5 starter, or Aceves, Mitre (PLEASE NO!!!) or we could give Brackman a shot. Then there is always going after a Chad Gaudin type of pitcher too.
Now, I expect good things out of Phil. I expect around 170 innins (Maybe closer to 165) and double digit wins, I also exect Hughes to have the #4 job next year after Pettitte retires
